Here's how to understand how to read this chart... every gem graded with the GIA Gemset will have a Hue, Tone, & Saturation rating for Daylight/Fluorescent lighting, as well as for Candlelight/Incandescent lighting conditions. Using the Hue, Tone, & Saturation Numbers on the Gem Report, match them to the Hue, Tone, & Saturation Numbers in the "Exceptional", "Very Good", "Good", "Fair", or "Acceptable" columns. This will tell you the overall Color Grade. Next look at the Carat Weight column on the Price Chart and match it with the Color Grade to arrive at the price per carat.
NOTE: all prices are per carat, so you need to multiply the carat price to the carat weight of the gem.
Example: the Alexandrite weighs 1.50 carats, has "G 5/2" and "R 5/3" hues making it fall in the "Exceptional" tone and saturation category, and it is "VVS"" clarity... the retail listed price is $20,000 to $35,000 per carat. So to get the total retail price for the 1.50 carat stone multiply carats times price, which in this case is 1.5 x $20,000 = $30,000 for low retail, and 1.5 x $35,000 = $52,500 for high retail. |
